Books

  • For the Win, Cory Doctorow. A young adult (that's me, right?) novel about economics and labor organizing in the context of online gaming.
  • The Hittite, Ben Bova. A new take on what happened at Troy and where Helen went when the party was over. History, violence, sex, it's all here.
  • The Windup Girl, Paolo Bacigalupi. A beautifully written dystopian view of this world when genetic engineering of plants and animals (yes, and eponymously, people) has run amok, shaping populations and cultures.
  • The Quiet War and Gardens of the Sun, Paul McAuley. These books recount the conflicts arising after ecological disaster reshaped the political powers of Earth. The two books are a continuous story which takes place all over the solar system and incorporates great-sounding science and technologies. All that plus war and romance and a wonderfully realized setting make these adventures a great read..
  • 61 Hours Jack Reacher, the ultimate loner, wreaks the violence he always does, but adds a bit more feeling than we are used to seeing in him.
  • The Passage Vampires, gun battles, romance -- what more could one ask of a dystopian view of post-apocalyptic America?
  • Druids, Barbara Galler-Smith and Josh Langston A historical fantasy about Druids in ancient Gaul and Iberia around 100 BC. For more details, see my review on Amazon.
  • The Sky People, S.M. Stirling With blithe disregard for the science in this reality, Stirling spins a tale of Terran swashbucklers on Venus in the 1980s.
  • Playing for Pizza, John Grisham A quick and light read, entertaining as Grisham always is.
  • The Limits of Power, Andrew J. Bacevich A well-written analysis of the role of military power in American foreign policy.
