The Quiet War and Gardens of the Sun, Paul McAuley. These books recount the conflicts arising after ecological disaster reshaped the political powers of Earth. The two books are a continuous story which takes place all over the solar system and incorporates great-sounding science and technologies. All that plus war and romance and a wonderfully realized setting make these adventures a great read..
61 Hours Jack Reacher, the ultimate loner, wreaks the violence he always does, but adds a bit more feeling than we are used to seeing in him.
The Passage Vampires, gun battles, romance -- what more could one ask of a dystopian view of post-apocalyptic America?

Playing for Pizza, John Grisham A quick and light read, entertaining as Grisham always is.
The Limits of Power, Andrew J. Bacevich A well-written analysis of the role of military power in American foreign policy.
